Apple Just Put Another Nail In Snapchat’s Proverbial Coffin

Apple announced it will launch Clips in April, a video-making app that allows users to capture photos and videos, combine multiple videos and include a variety of features like Filters, Overlays, Posters and Live Titles.

We can draw many similarities between Clips and the already existing features of Snapchat, Instagram and Messenger. However, the key difference is that Clips is not attempting to build a stand-alone network. Instead, it acts as a production tool and encourages sharing across all existing platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and even Snapchat. Although the main emphasis is to encourage sharing via iMessage, the option of social network freedom is nevertheless there.

Until now, the mass-market video messaging features have been largely tied to the boundaries of their parent platforms. Users post Snaps on Snapchat, Stories on Instagram and Days on Messenger. To take part in advanced video messaging, users had to use at least one of these social networks, often multiple ones, as different social circles use different platforms. Users often tend to post content only on the one channel they find most relevant. With Clips, users can now make one Clip and share with their peers on Snapchat, their mother on Instagram and their grandfather on Facebook in one seamless session – or use iMessage to share it with their phone contacts. Apple encourages users to engage with the latter by deploying its face recognition technology that automatically suggests to share the clips with the people featured in the video.

Why Is Apple Doing This?

Apple rightly recognized that advanced video messaging features have grown so popular, that they have become a major product differentiator in the war of social networks. Apple has always been all about making consumers’ lives easier with user-friendly products. If mobile users have now evolved to expect a great photo/video messaging production experience as a standard, it is in Apple’s utmost interest to deliver it better than any non-Apple product can. Because of this, it is highly unlikely that we are going to see an Android version anytime soon (unless the uptake on iOS exceeds all expectations and a scalable opportunity emerges to drive potential new Apple users into the pipeline).

Apple is joining the trend of making video messaging features a part of its own product differentiation, but it does it in a completely different, competitive landscape. While most companies use video messaging features to differentiate their social media platforms, no other smartphone manufacturers do so at scale.

Implications

Besides creating a new product differentiator for iOS that will help drive further brand loyalty, Clips may disrupt both Snap Inc. and Facebook Inc.. If consumers start using Clips to produce photo and video messages at scale, all social networks risk a decrease in their average session lengths as a result. Even worse however, is their risk of loosing a portion of the high-value Apple users, who may simply choose to start sharing via the iMessage app. This in turn could threaten the value for advertisers and subsequently drive ad-inventory prices down.

This is much more of an existential threat for Snapchat than Facebook, because the former is amidst figuring out its business model and it does not have a solid foothold globally. After losing its product differentiation in the social messaging space, it will now face additional competitive pressures from the most valuable company in the world.

Entrepreneurs And Finance People Share DNA

Gone are the days where your average finance person was the stereotypical bean counter. Today they come in all sorts of shapes and forms and you will find that many of them are starting to show some DNA of an entrepreneur. Wow, did he just say that? I couldn’t think of two kinds of people that are more different. OK, hang on and let me try to explain. First, let’s just agree on what an entrepreneur really is.

“a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit.”
There are two main elements of above and then some other aspects that are not that well covered. 1) Someone who starts a business and 2) Someone who takes risks in hope of profit. I’ll give you that while there are finance people who set up businesses because they are also entrepreneurs then that’s not the main point as finance people, in general, are not people who set up businesses. As for the second point then there’s starting to more resemblance.

Risks vs. profits
At school, all finance students are taught about the relationship between risks and profits and how to balance them. A typical framework used is the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) which describes the relationship between the expected returns at any given risk profile.

So the balance between risk and returns is a finance person in a nutshell and a clear area where entrepreneurs need to also become more like finance people. If we continue to test that argument then let’s look at what’s missing from above definition. The idea! So in order to become an entrepreneur you typically need to have an idea. Entrepreneurs are full of these although it’s always harder to get idea #2 after you’ve made a living out of the first one. When it comes to finance people I always say that they don’t have to come up with the ideas but more need to be facilitators of ideas i.e. take them from the idea stage to something that gets executed on. But does it stop there? It shouldn’t. Finance people who truly know and understand business will be able to come up with just as many ideas as entrepreneurs. Finance people then have the added advantage that they are able to quantify and qualify the idea, create a business case and connect with the right people in a company or in the market to execute on it. Some entrepreneurs do this very well, of course, but I’d also say that here another area where entrepreneurs can learn from finance people.

Glorifying the finance person at the expense of the entrepreneur?
Right, if all finance people are so great at everything an entrepreneur does then why are they not all successful entrepreneurs? OK, so I might be glorifying the finance people a bit here and maybe what they lack is the true courage to jump into a business adventure, yet the evidence of sharing DNA is definitely still present. While they might not be bean counters anymore they are still a bit conservative and perhaps not willing to become entrepreneurs also. So if you can take the best of both you will get entrepreneurs that become better at managing risks for profits and managing the full cycle from idea to execution and delivery. What’s not to like about that? Then we can talk about what finance people can learn from entrepreneurs another day!

Houndlabs Inc. has created the world’s first cannabis breathalyzer

Along with the legalization of cannabis comes new laws to make sure everyone is safe. As I wrote last week in my article regarding the approval of cannabis in Amsterdam, places that permit cannabis are now enacting laws forbidding people under the influence of cannabis to drive. In order to control this, the breathalyzer was created to test for alcohol. Now, Hound Labs, Inc. has created the world’s first cannabis breathalyzer.

Who is the team behind HoundLabs, Inc?

Dr. Mike Lynn, an ER physician, reserve deputy sheriff, and former venture capitalist and Mr. Kuni, a patent attorney with an extensive technical background in engineering and science cofounded the company in Oakland, California in 2014. Their device was also developed in partnership with scientists The team now consists of Jenny Lynn, the CMO, Daniel Jones, the business analyst, Louisa Ashford, the marketing manager, Matt Francis, and Dan Fletcher.

What issues are HoundLabs, Inc solving?

With the growing legalization of cannabis, there has to be laws enacted to protect everyone’s safety. Although the effects of cannabis are not as drastic as alcohol, it is still illegal to drive while under the influence of cannabis. Research has shown that the negative effects increase lane waving, delayed reaction time, and not able to focus on the road. It is very hard for officials to get an exact number on how many car crashes are caused by people who were under the influence of cannabis while driving because cannabis can stay in the body for months at a time. Therefore, when the person is tested and cannabis shows up in their system, it is nearly impossible for them to be able to pinpoint exactly when the person was under the influence. HoundLabs Inc has created the world’s first dual cannabis and alcohol breathalyzer to identify and measure recent cannabis and alcohol use.

Despite the fact that this product is mainly in law enforcement's’ hands, Mike Flynn is firm that their goal is not to arrest people.

“To be very specific, we were trying to educate people about (how) it’s illegal to drive stoned.”

He claims that the readings of THC levels in the breath did correlate to how recently the driver consumed cannabis. The drivers who failed these tests were not arrested; they were actually taken to a safe location.

The product has been successfully tested by the Lompoc, California police department.

How does this breathalyzer work?

Once the breathalyzer has captured a sufficient breath sample, it performs an automated process to analyze the breath sample. The device is programmed to perform a series of automated routines that happen within a single use, disposable cartridge. First, it chemically isolates the THC molecules from the breath sample and then generates a composition for measurement. The automated process then triggers a measurement mechanism to optically measure the THC level in the generated composition, outputting a measurement value in picograms on the display. The resulting measurement value corresponds the level of THC present in the breath sample at the time it is collected. This entire process lasts only a couple of minutes.

What’s next for HoundLabs, Inc?
They are planning to conduct more field trials, conduct the clinical trials, and obtain even more data. They want to make sure they ride the balance between safety and fairness in making sure the right people get off the road while making sure to not arrest those that are not currently under the influence. They plan on raising additional funding to ready the company for commercialization and a targeted product launch towards the end of 2017.

The 1 problem why 99% startups die before birth

The 1 problem why 99% startups die before birth

This originated from my short answer to a question on Quora (http://qr.ae/TMqjWO):

What tips could set one up for creating a successful internet based business?
Sell first, build later.

Supply and demand. The order is: validate demand first, create supply later.

Many startups, including my own in the past, are born just for the sake of creating supply, without validating demand. They’d go full out on creating a product/service, only then figure out if there’s demand and how to sell it.

In reality, it’s supposed to be the other way around. Demand first, supply second. Validate your “supply idea” using an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) first. Only actually create that supply when you’re sure there’s sufficient demand. Your MVP can be as simple as a landing page describing what problem you’re trying to solve and how exactly you’re gonna solve it. Put up an email subscription form and share that MVP (reddit, producthunt, etc., depending on your niche), see if the world actually wants it.

Thanks for reading! If you've enjoyed this piece, consider sharing with people who'll find it useful.

These 10 Leadership Habits Have Been Found in the World’s Best Leaders

Where are you in your own journey as a leader in relation to these characteristics?

If you're not familiar with the leadership movement known as servant leadership, you might want to grab a cup of java and pull up a chair. This may just transform how you lead your tribe moving forward.

What we are finding is that organizations around the world are changing their attitudes toward leadership. Yes, it's been written and talked about for decades, with great authors defining it in different ways, calling it different things.

In the end, most of these "thought leaders" have been talking about the same things–that leadership (and life, really) is about human relationships.

Consequently, servant leadership has emerged over the last 30 years on a grand scale in some of the most admired and successful companies on the planet, including many named to Fortune Magazine's annual listing of "The 100 Best Companies to Work For." Companies like Zappos, The Container Store, and Southwest Airlines have successfully integrated servant leadership into their corporate cultures.

To immortalize the movement, world-renowned management thinker Danah Zohar, in her groundbreaking book Rewiring the Corporate Brain, called servant leadership "the essence of quantum thinking and quantum leadership."

Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due
Before I give you the 10 practices of a servant-leader (or, if you can't wait, scroll down to "The Gold Mine" for the good stuff), I need to frame this article into its proper context and give credit to the right people.

Robert K. Greenleaf is the first person that needs distinct accolades as the founder of the modern servant leadership movement. Without his work and research, I don't have a basis for my work or speaking engagements.

As his bio states, Greenleaf's work continues to have a lasting impact on fields as diverse as systems thinking, management, leadership, organizational development, religion, assessment and evaluation, and scores of other disciplines.

Legendary management consultant Peter Drucker, Greenleaf's good friend and collaborator for over a decade, called him "the wisest man I ever met."

But there's another person worth noting in this conversation.

Meet Larry Spears
Allow me to introduce you to Larry Spears. He is deserving of his own bust on the Mt. Rushmore of servant leadership for advancing the movement after Greenleaf passed in 1990.

Spears, a prolific author and editor, has been called today's foremost authority on servant leadership. Through his writings, millions have been introduced to servant leadership. It didn't hurt having Stone Phillips interview him on NBC's Dateline in front of ten million viewers back in 2004.

After Greenleaf's death, Spears spent years combing over a truck-load of Greenleaf's personal papers and discovered previously unknown and unpublished essays written by Greenleaf over a fifty-year period.

This…was…a gold mine.

Chief Human Resource Officers take note. In his analysis, Spears was able to identify the ten characteristics of the servant-leader as being of critical importance to transforming an organization.

While by no means exhaustive, Spears says "they do serve to communicate the power and promise that this concept offers to those who are open to its invitation and challenge."

The Gold Mine
As I go over these, I want you to consider where you may be in your own journey as a leader in relation to these characteristics. Call this you new measure for leadership success.

1. Listening
Listening lands first on this list because it is a crucial yet frequently absent trait in leaders who are self-oriented. Greenleaf wrote that, "A true natural servant automatically responds to any problem by listening first." He further added, "True listening builds strength in other people." So practically speaking, this is a leader that automatically responds through active listening–to understand the other side. She will listen before she speaks, as she speaks, and after she speaks. In decision making, she listens completely before deciding. This takes practice.

2. Empathy
The second characteristic is empathy, which has been proven in this study to drive performance. Empathy is really an extension of listening, if you think about it. Servant leaders attempt to understand and empathize with others–to put themselves in others' shoes. This means listening without judgment. As empathetic leaders, workers are considered not only as employees, but as people who need respect and appreciation for their personal and professional development. This generates a competitive advantage.

3. Healing
What Spears meant by "healing" is that leaders recognize the opportunity to help make whole those with whom they come in contact. A servant leader tries to help people solve their problems and conflicts in relationships, because he/she wants to develop the skills of each individual. This leads to the formation of a business culture in which the working environment is characterized by dynamic, fun engagement and no fear from failure.

4. Awareness
Servant leaders have a strong sense of what is going on around them. They are always looking for cues, they know what's going on and will rarely be fooled. They're very self-aware.

5. Persuasion
Servant leaders don't take advantage of their power and status by coercing compliance; instead, they try to use influence to convince others. They are effective at building consensus within groups through influence and persuasion.

6. Conceptualization
This is the ability to look at a problem by thinking beyond the day-to-day realities. Greenleaf said that the servant leader can conceive solutions to problems that do not currently exist. They see beyond the limits of the business and focus on long term goals. They work their big hairy audacious goals, but they do it S.M.A.R.T.

7. Foresight
Foresight is the ability to foresee the likely outcome of a situation. It means understanding the lessons from the past, the realities of the present, and the likely consequence of a decision for the future.

8. Stewardship
This a commitment to not just serving the needs of others but also of the organization and its mission as a whole. It's holding your company in trust for the greater good of society.

9. Commitment to the Growth of People
Pretty self-explanatory. This is a demonstrated appreciation and open encouragement of others and their growth. In practice, this can include things like having a budget for personal and professional development, taking a personal interest in the ideas and suggestions from everyone, encouraging worker involvement in decision-making, and even helping out a laid-off employee find work.

10. Building Community
Servant leaders are what I call compassionate collaborators. They show appreciation and praise employees often for their contributions. They want to get to know what makes their employees tick, what drives them, what gets them up in the morning so that they can support them in those endeavors. As I've written before, building community can only happen through connecting and making relationships work.

Three Sections of the Full Spectrum
If you break down the characteristics into sections of the full spectrum of a servant leader, you'll see that the servant side of a servant-leader encompasses the listening, the empathy and the healing.

The leader side encompasses awareness, being able to persuade, conceptualization, and foresight. Every leader has to have those traits and be able to use them effectively.

And in the middle is where the two sides overlap into the servant-leader: stewardship, commitment to growing people and the building of community.

Put them all together, you have the best and most whole version of a leader, bar none.

A Few Questions in Closing
Now reflect, if you will, how you may have modeled some of these approaches in the last 24 hours. My questions in closing:

How have you been a servant leader reading the examples given?
What if we could think and act this way moving forward in our work? What would that do for your team, business, organization?
How would this change your roles as managers, executives, founders, board chairs, or even at home as spouses, fathers and mothers?

How To Plan Mobile App Development for your Business

To create an effective app, it is essential to have a nicely laid- organized process and concept. Preplanning the app development program and development procedure will help in averting deviations from set goals, which can cause dramatic developments to the ultimate product. But, before you carry on, here are a few important things you should know.

Pre Strategy Your Mobile App Development- How can it work? How can it be useful to end users and participate? Thus, the process calls for generally defining the program. Now, why is this significant? When your mobile app developers have a clear understanding of what is expected from them, what are the characteristics the app should have, and what are your targets of mobile program development, it assists in constructing the mobile app that is more important and essential.

Taking this point further, when fair attempt and time is spent in pre-planning your app development process, it may go a long way in eliminating delays, minimizing your overhead costs, and providing the project punctually. Planning not only involves defining the app and its functionalities, but also includes establishing proper targets, timelines, and budget. Lucidity and unnecessary delays are eliminated, thus, reducing overhead costs. Precise price projection is ready with the development and marketing team so that deviations can be identified by them and minimize the exact same.

Pre-planning also helps gain insights into your audience, competitors, and latest market trends. This may be most profitable in bringing innovative and interesting turning points in the essential features of your app. Thus, with valuable market knowledge from an early phase, you are able to successfully build an app that's unique and offers somewhat distinct characteristics than other similar mobile apps in the market. Adding to this, effective communication of the theory with your development partner can help them clearly identify duties and their functions in order that they are able to provide better. Planning also helps to streamline your development procedure, and what it organized to generate outcomes that are better.

Looking to build a mobile app? Not sure how to go in regards to the pre-planning period? Here is a thorough guide for you:

Describe Your Mobile App in a Nutshell – The initial step of pre-planning comprises preparing an incredibly short description of what your app must be all about. Make it as short as possible, but feature the core notion of the app and key features you might be anticipating.

Ascertain the Needs of Your Intended Audience – This really is one of the most crucial points, but it may illuminate many factors that may be valuable in constructing a proper cellular app when done right. For this, it is imperative to recognize your market and know their ‘buying’ behavior and inclinations. It's possible for you to create forums and conversations or connect together socially to take an online survey. This can help incorporate the same in your cell program, and likewise, ascertain the things they exactly anticipate from your program.

Browse through Similar Mobile Apps – It is more easy to locate similar apps in the app store unless your app notion isn’t something in the ‘niche’ category or totally unique. Go through a few of these programs, and find their essential characteristics, how they work, technical aspects, customer ratings, and reviews, etc. This could only help you ideate.

Brainstorm a ‘Powerful’ App Idea – On the contrary to the idea of “Too many cooks spoil the broth, ” when you brainstorm with a group of like-minded people, you happen to be capable of developing ideas that are more innovative and distinctive. But for this, it is important to spot people who can add value to your app thought, and not always like-minded individuals. Brainstorming with individuals from various fields is the best way to create a better outcome and groundbreaking ideas. Make sure you are able to brainstorm from technical and customer, promotion viewpoint.

Produce a Master Record of Outcomes – This may differ from everything you conceptualized in the beginning. Based on your own research and findings from the above-mentioned measures, create a comprehensive list and compare this with the initial concept. In this step, you also had better improvise the brief description on the basis of the most recent changes.

Translate Your Ideas right into a Simple Flowchart – Flowchart or a diagram is the best way to communicate your app idea, workflow, and functionalities. But ensure that you keep it clear, simple and concise for everyone to understand easily. The flowchart should include testing demands, deadlines, budget, etc., characteristics and functionalities, development procedure, roles and duties, QA and the program theory Keep it as comprehensive as you can, if not in a flowchart then in display or a PowerPoint presentation -by-screen navigation of the app.

Conclusion

Preplanning is important for mobile app development, although not the single key to building an effective app. We regularly are inclined to overlook the need frequently or to add new attributes upgrade an app throughout its lifecycle. Give attention to creating user-centric and bug-free continue providing user experience that is improved through additional iterations, and program from its first release. In once, hire an experienced and professional development team who can help assemble the app of your fantasy, and within the set time and budget.

Sustainable Entrepreneurship – A Profitable Business?

Sustainable equals cost! This misconception has become in the minds, probably not completely erroneously. But entrepreneurship based on economic longevity, environmental and social can also allow for savings in his "business plan".

Doing business differently; the idea is popular. However, for these young companies, it is not to be part of a trend, but to realize sustainable business daily.

No one knows exactly how many there are. Especially because for some companies, it is more of a marketing ploy than reality. A census would risk comparing apples and pears … But those who actually commit share three common things: environmental, social purpose and viable business model for the long term. The three pillars of any sustainable company that respects itself, to which theorists sometimes add the good governance criteria.

Those who comply with these basic principles are often part of the SME category.

Many are active in the food sector, probably the one that makes most leaders to stick to their vision of the economy and society.

Greener, fairer, more local, more sustainable, etc. But we also find alternative start-up in other areas, such as construction, services, consultancy, energy…

This choice of sustainability, is it necessarily a means of additional costs for production, higher costs, lower margins, high prices for end customers? Or, against all odds, it allows also to generate savings, reduce certain positions? In other words, is it a constraint to overcome or advantage to exploit?

Some sectors are more conducive

"It depends on the sector, says Mr. Marc Lemaire, founder of EcoRes, a consultancy specializing in these issues. Sometimes it costs a bit more but consumers are willing to pay more for it.”  And to quote the catering industry, insulating materials, soft mobility, green delivery, recovery and processing of raw materials…

“However, he says, there are others where it gets more complicated, where there is no market. In textiles, for example. Prices in general are so low that those who engage are really confident in some niche markets, like high fashion or perfume, it is also difficult because these products are responsible for societal symbols Even finding in industrial production. To venture there, it would really need a lot of investment"

It also depends on the objectives. Whoever wants at all costs to become profitable and rich in less time than it takes to say, will probably explore another way … In a sustainable economy, the future is in sight in the long term. "Look entomophagy as illustrates Mr. Marc Lemaire. We know there is an alternative to meat, but there are not so long, no one believed in the idea of eating insects. Today ,attitudes are changing. We work at 10-15 years. "
