Mark Zuckerberg just signed the death warrant for the smartphone

Matt Weinberger
It's no secret Mark Zuckerberg is pinning Facebook's prospects on augmented reality — technology that overlays digital imagery onto the real world, like Snapchat's signature camera filters.

At this year's F8 conference, taking place this week, Zuckerberg doubled down on the company's ambitious 10-year master plan, which was first revealed in 2016. According to this timeline, Facebook expects to turn artificial intelligence, ubiquitous internet connectivity, and virtual and augmented reality into viable parts of its business over the next decade.

To accelerate the rise of augmented reality, a big part of the plan, Zuckerberg unveiled the Camera Effects platform — basically a set of tools for outside developers to build augmented-reality apps that you can access from the existing Facebook app's camera. That would theoretically open the door for Facebook to host the next phenomenon like "Pokémon Go."

While this announcement seems pretty innocuous, make no mistake — Facebook is once again putting itself into direct competition with Google and Apple, trying to create yet another parallel universe of apps and tools that don't rely on the smartphones' marketplaces. As The New York Times notes, Zuckerberg has long been disappointed that Facebook never built a credible smartphone operating system of its own.

This time, though, Facebook is also declaring war on pretty much everyone else in the tech industry, too. While it'll take at least a decade to fully play out, the stuff Facebook is talking about today is just one more milestone on the slow march toward the death of the smartphone and the rise of even weirder and wilder futures.

Why buy a TV?
Zuckerberg tipped his hand, just a bit, during Tuesday's Facebook F8 keynote. During a demo of the company's vision for augmented reality — in the form of a pair of easy-to-wear, standard-looking glasses — he showed how you could have a virtual "screen" in your living room, bigger than your biggest TV.

"We don't need a physical TV. We can buy a $1 app 'TV' and put it on the wall and watch it," Zuckerberg told USA Today ahead of his keynote. "It's actually pretty amazing when you think about how much of the physical stuff we have doesn't need to be physical."

Zuckerberg says the goal is to release glasses, like these, that can project virtual objects like chessboards or even TVs onto what you see. Facebook

That makes sense, assuming you're into the idea of wearing a computer on your face (and you're OK with Facebook intermediating everything you see and hear, glitches and all).

But it's not just TVs. This philosophy could extend to smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, fitness trackers, or anything else that has a screen or relies on one to work. Zuckerberg even showed off a street art installation that's just a blank wall until you wave the Facebook camera app over it to reveal a mural.

For Microsoft, which has already dipped its toe in this area with its HoloLens holographic goggles, this is a foregone conclusion. HoloLens boss Alex Kipman recently called the demise of the smartphone the "natural conclusion" of augmented reality and its associated technologies.

War of the worlds
The problem, naturally, is that a huge chunk of the world's economy hinges on the production of phones, TVs, tablets, and all those other things that Facebook thinks could be replaced with this technology.

Even Zuckerberg acknowledges it's a long road ahead. That said, this Camera Effects platform, should it succeed in attracting a bunch of users, could go down as a savvy move. The apps that are built for the Facebook Camera today could wind up as the first versions of the apps you'd use with those glasses.

Microsoft's futuristic HoloLens goggles provide an early look at Facebook's goal. Microsoft

In the short term, Facebook's play for augmented reality is going to look a lot like competing with Snapchat — and in a meaningful way, it is. Facebook needs developer and user love, so it needs to keep offering fun and funny tools to keep people from moving away from using its apps.

In the long term, though, this is Facebook versus everybody else to usher in an age of a new kind of computing — and pretty much every tech company out there will get caught in the crossfire, as Apple, Google, Microsoft, and more rush out their responses to this extremely existential, but still meaningful, threat.

Cape Town voted best city in the world… again. #ProudlySouthAfrican

The Mother City is pulling out all the stops, flashing her beauty and appeal to foreigners and gathering awards around the globe for her sublime tourist offerings.
Most recently, the 2015/2016 Telegraph Travel Awards chose Cape Town as the Best City in the World for the fourth year running, dusting out Vancouver and Venice, which took second and third place respectively in the Best City category.

In Condé Nast’s highly acclaimed Reader’s Choice Awards, the Mother City also took the top honours as the number one food city in the world!

This is two places up to top spot from last year’s 3rd place in the Condé Nast World’s Best Food Cities list.

The publication hits it on the head saying, “From sipping regional rosé on Table Mountain to scarfing hake and fries at Kalky’s, there’s a breezy simplicity to Cape Town’s iconic eating experiences”.

As a cherry on top – literally – Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has also just launched a brand new free WiFi lounge on the very top of the mountain, making it so much easier for visitors to share their beautiful surroundings with the rest of the world.

But wait… there’s more.

The Mother City wasn’t only voted the best destination in the world in the Telegraph Travel Awards, but is also listed third in the Best Country segment, missing the top spots only to New Zealand and the Maldives.

The Telegraph Travel Awards are voted for by 75 000 readers worldwide.

Condé Nast again noted the variety of food offerings Cape Town has, from laid-back, lekker-local fish and chips in Kalk Bay to ultra-modern fusion at the Pot Luck Club in Woodstock.

The Pot Luck Club

So, whether you’re after natural scenery, or interested in indulging in the diverse food scene Cape Town offers, you won’t be let down.

Enver Duminy for Cape Town Tourism says the recognition will aid in creating more job opportunities for locals.

“These accolades pave the way for even more innovation, entrepreneurship and job creation within the tourism sector.

“They also accurately reflect the variety of experiences Cape Town has to offer visitors, from unparalleled natural beauty, to delicious, intimate culinary adventures in our many restaurants.”

Apart from the weak rand, which is making travel to South Africa very appealing to foreigners, Cape Town is only very accessible in terms of accommodation.

Cape Town currently has the 21st biggest Airbnb market in the world, and guests can stay in high profile Cape Town suburbs for a fraction of typical area prices – whilst also immersing themselves within local culture.

A high percentage of locals are also using Airbnb for staycations within SA’s borders.

For hotel stays, SA hotel prices low in comparison to other African hubs. The average rate for a hotel room in Addis Ababa is about R3 212 per night, which is more than double what guests would pay in Cape Town – an average of R1 448 per night, according to a 2015 survey.

Express Joy

Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any
merry? let him sing psalms (James 5:13).

Imagine that someone got the news that a kind
person left him an estate worth a hundred million
dollars; how do you think he’d receive the news? I’m
most certain he won’t receive it with a listless “Thank
you.” He’ll express much joy for what he received.
Likewise, when you pray about a situation, maybe a
health condition, and you believe God answered you,
act like it. Express joy!
One day many years ago, I was leading the church
service and had invited everyone to come forward for
prayer. They all came around the altar and prayed.
After the prayer, they returned to their seats as though
they had just been whipped, and the Lord said to
me, “They didn’t receive answers to their prayer.”
He didn’t say, “I didn’t answer them,” because He
always answers when we pray. But they didn’t receive
because they didn’t act like people who had received
answers to what they prayed about.
There have been people who received healing or
other miracles in a meeting, and just as they turned
to leave the venue, everything returned to what it
was before. They lost the healing. Their healing was
a sign; God had given them attention, and got their
attention, but expected them to further act their faith.
He wanted them to rejoice, testify, and be glad about
what already happened, and thus keep their miracle,
but they didn’t.
Many people don’t know that their expressions
are a message. Faith is expressed in words and in
actions. If your words and actions don’t demonstrate
your faith, then there’s no faith. Every time people
received something from the Lord in the Bible, they
demonstrated it in their joy, and their blessing was
sustained. Some actually received more as a result of
their joyful testimonies and gratitude; an example is
the leper in Luke 17:11-19.
The Bible says faith without works—corresponding
action—is dead. If you accept what God has said about
you, you’ve got to act like it.
Prayer
I thank you Precious Father, for
making my life a bundle of joy
and happiness, and a testimony of
your goodness. I go forth in your
glory today, in righteousness,
peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost,
in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
