What can you do to help Syrian children under attack? Quite a lot, it turns out.

“The depth of suffering is unprecedented. Millions of children in Syria come under attack on a daily basis, their lives turned upside down,” said Geert Cappelaere, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa. “Each and every child is scarred for life with horrific consequences to their health, well-being and future.”

1. DONATE TO HELP UNICEF PROTECT SYRIA'S CHILDREN.

Syria is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a child.  Nearly 1,300 children have been killed or injured during 2016 alone.

Inside Syria, 2.8 million children live under military siege or in hard-to-reach areas. At least 5 million Syrian children have fled their homes due to violence and war.  Some are sheltering in camps within Syria, while others live in refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey and Egypt. More than 2.2 million Syrian children have also been forced to leave school.

In response, UNICEF has helped mobilize the largest humanitarian operation in history, supplying food, water, education, warm clothing and critical immunizations to millions of children and their families in Syria and neighboring countries.

But Syrian children urgently need more help. UNICEF is appealing for nearly $1.4 billion for Syrian children in 2017.

Support UNICEF's lifesaving work by making a donation to provide Syrian children with the help they need now.

2. JOIN OR START A FUNDRAISER TO AID SYRIAN KIDS.

Make a difference by starting your own fundraiser in support of UNICEF's campaign to aid the more than 8.4 million children who have been hurt by the Syria conflict. You can help save a child's life or give them hope and a chance for a better future.

Or donate to the Play For Syria Facebook Fundraiser, running through April 5, 2017 to coincide with March Madness, started by more than a dozen basketball players to support UNICEF programs for children in Syria and Syrian child refugees. Some of the players are American, some Syrian, some are former NBA, some former NCAA — but all have played ball in Syria. And all are deeply concerned for the children suffering there.

Choose Your Friends

Have you ever depended upon a friend? If not, you can certainly trust Jesus.

"He told them, "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. " (John 15:12-15)

When I was in grade 4 of secondary school, I sprained my ankle. Being on crutches for 6 weeks made it hard to keep up with the other kids. But one friend stayed with me and made sure I didn't get left out. We came from different social and racial backgrounds, but that didn’t matter to either of us. She literally let me lean on her, and I was grateful for her kindness and strength.

Jesus Is Our Friend
Have you ever depended upon a friend like that? If not, you can certainly trust Jesus. He is not just our Lord; He is our Friend, too. He told His followers, "Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one’s friends" (John 15:12-15). My school friend displayed Christ-like love when she sacrificed her time for me.

Chosen Friend
My friend and I were different in many ways, but she still chose to help me. Likewise, God knew that we needed help, and He told His people: "But as for you, Israel my servant, Jacob My chosen one, descended from Abraham My friend, I have called you… For I have chosen you" (Isaiah 41:8-9). God and humans are not even close to equal; but because of His friendship with Abraham's descendants, God fulfilled His plan to save humanity from sin.

Act on Your Friendship
We display our friendship with God and our faith in Him by obeying Him, doing what He asks of us: "[Abraham's] faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete. …So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone" (James 2:22, 24) Also, being a Christ-like friend to others is a great way to show Jesus' love. Praying for your friends, as Jesus did, is a great way to care: "I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail" (Luke 22:32).

Prayer, Care and Share Jesus
The Power of a Friendship!

It's so exciting to know that the Lord of the universe, Jesus Christ, calls us His friends (if we follow His commands, John 15, v. 14)! And he wants us to love each other as He loved us.

Last week we started to identify lost people around us, who don't yet have a living relationship with Jesus. This week's step is to initiate a friendship with one of these people.

Do you care enough for a lost person you see regularly, to start being friends with them? You don't have to rush. Pray about this person you identify. If you are shy, ask the Lord or a friend for help in reaching out. Do something that fits your culture – it may just be inviting them for a cup of coffee.

You do not have to talk to them about Jesus right away. Just become friends and build the relationship. Ask them to tell their life stories, then really listen. Share your story when asked, without preaching. If they invite you to do something you don't feel is right, simply decline politely and without condemning. They will soon understand and accept you as you are – because you accept them as they are.

Whether this is easy or challenging for you, follow Jesus' example and be a friend to someone who needs Him!

Pray this week:

For someone who is brokenhearted and does not realize that Jesus is there for him or her.

…They Don’t Count At All

How terrible when all people speak well of you;
their ancestors said the very same things about the
false prophets (Luke 6:26 GNB).
God desires that every one of us be successful.
And depending on your level of success,
you’ll automatically become a persona non-grata to
some; you’ll attract adversaries. This isn’t out of place.
Never be worried, downcast, feel rejected or sad if
there’re those who are against you, or those who don’t
accept or approve of your success.
Actually, when you identify those who are against
your success, you should be glad! The reason is that
this world is so big, with a population in excess of
seven billion people. Those who are against you left
everything else just to be against you; that shows
you’re very important. So, get excited when you’re
criticised by your adversaries.
There’s something inspiring in what T.L Osborn
said several years ago; he said, “When you see a man
with many or powerful or influential enemies, mark that
man, for he’s going places.” How true! You measure
a man’s strength, worth or value, not by his friends,
but by the power of his adversaries. You measure a
man’s greatness or influence, by the number or power
of his enemies.
As long as you’re successful, your detractors will
have you in focus. Once you’re no longer as radiant or as successful as they think, they wouldn’t care. But
you don’t need to bother about them, because they
don’t count. When they come out against you, they’ll
stumble and fall, because the Lord is your salvation.
Never give thoughts and undue considerations to
Satan, and the activities of wicked and unreasonable
men that seek to bring you down.
Understand this: your daily life is the fulfilment
of that which has already been written. The Psalmist
affirmed, “…When the wicked, even mine enemies
and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they
stumbled and fell” (Psalm 27:1-2). For those who set
themselves up to be your enemies, their fate is sealed:
they’ll stumble and fall.
Therefore, refuse to be distracted. Focus on what
you’ve been called to do. There’s no need to pray
about your enemies; instead, love them as Jesus said:
“…Love your enemies, do good to them which hate
you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them
which despitefully use you” (Luke 6:27-28).
Confession
The peace of God garrisons
my heart and mind in Christ,
irrespective of the adversaries
and adversities around me. My
heart is stayed on the Lord who
is my rock and fortress, my
protection, and salvation. Now
and always, I walk in victory,
and in the dominion of the
Word, reigning by grace through
righteousness. Hallelujah!
